Washington Parish is located on the southeastern tip of Louisiana, sharing numerous borders with the state of Mississippi. Home to over 46,000 residents, the parish was founded in 1819 and is named for our country’s first president, George Washington. Formerly one of the eight “Florida Parishes” of Spanish West Florida, Washington Parish was formed by breaking off from northern St. Tammany Parish in 1819. The parish seat is in Franklinton and the largest city in the parish is in Bogalusa. Part of the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge is located in Washington Parish. Bluegrass music is a staple of Washington Parish and festivities are held annually to enjoy the relaxing music, including the Great Southern Spring Bluegrass Event and the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival. Washington Parish is neighbors with Walthall County, Mississippi, to its north and St. Tammany Parish to its south.
