Sulphur

Located in Calcasieu Parish in southeast Louisiana, the city of Sulphur houses over 20,000 residents and is named for the many sulfur mines that were excavated in the early 20th century. One of the area’s claims to fame comes from German immigrant Herman Frasch, who invented the “Frasch method” of mining sulfur, pumping hot steam into the ground, liquidizing the mineral and pumping the liquid to the surface. This method greatly facilitated sulphur mining in the area and worldwide. Following the extensive growth of the area in the late 1800’s due to the booming sulfur industry, Sulphur was formally incorporated into a town in 1914. Like the rest of Louisiana, however, the Sulphur area is still dependent on oil refineries and petrochemical plants for employment. Tourists can learn about the history of the city by visiting the Brimstone Museum or the Henning Cultural Center. Sulphur is located directly off of I-10 and is neighbors with both Lake Charles and Moss Bluff to its east.
