New Iberia
Located Southeast of Lafayette, Louisiana in the heart of Acadiana, New Iberia is the parish seat of Iberia Parish and is home to nearly 31,000 residents making the city the tenth most-populated in the state. New Iberia was settled in 1779 by Spanish settlers, who named the city in honor of the Iberian Peninsula. The city would be formally incorporated in 1839. Avery Island, famous for producing Tabasco Sauce, is located near New Iberia. The city is well-known for its vibrant festivities held each year to celebrate the city’s rich Cajun heritage, such as the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival and the World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off, the Cajun Hot Sauce Festival, the Great Gator Race, the Acadiana Dragon Boat Festival, and the Blitz Dance Competition. New Iberia is either the birthplace, or home, of many notable celebrities and politicians, including former Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco and Federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge John Duhe.
The leading cause of injury in Louisiana is motor vehicle accidents, which are responsible for thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths each year in the state. In Iberia Parish in 2012, over 1,100 injuries and nine deaths were directly attributable to vehicular crashes. These accidents are simply everyday occurrences, and the causes of these collisions can range from an inattentive driver to a drunk driver. Apportioning liability in these collisions can oftentimes be difficult due to the complex circumstances that surround the accident, which often leads to problems obtaining compensation from the insurance companies. If you ever find yourself in an automobile accident, you should immediately consult a skilled personal injury attorney who can help protect your rights.
