Mamou
The city of Mamou, which houses over 3,200 residents, is located in Evangeline Parish and is known as “The Cajun Music Capital of the World.” Origins of the unique name “Mamou” are plentiful and varied. One such story is that the city is named after legendary Native American, Chief Mamou. Another such story is that 18th century Anglo Americans first called it “Mammoth Prairie,” for the vast prairie located in and around Mamou. Once the French took control, they called it “Mamou,” for mammoth. After French control of Louisiana ended, C.C. Duson, who also helped found the cities of Eunice and Crowley, founded Mamou in 1907 and the city was formally incorporated in 1911.
Known for its deep Cajun heritage, Mamou hosts the annual Mamou Cajun Music Festival, where locals and tourists alike can listen to the unique sounds of south Louisiana Cajun Zydeco music.
The leading cause of injury in Louisiana is motor vehicle accidents, which are responsible for thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths each year in the state. In Evangeline Parish in 2012, 485 injuries and ten deaths were directly attributable to vehicular crashes. These accidents are simply everyday occurrences, and the causes of these collisions can range from an inattentive driver to a drunk driver. Apportioning liability in these collisions can oftentimes be difficult due to the complex circumstances that surround the accident, which often results in problems obtaining compensation from insurance companies. If you ever find yourself in an automobile accident, you should immediately consult a skilled personal injury attorney who can help protect your rights.
