Located only a short drive from the state capital of Baton Rouge and across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans, Livingston Parish has a population of over 131,000 residents and was formed in 1832 from the southern part of St. Helena Parish. Some say that the parish is named after Edward Livingston, the famed jurist who helped draft the Louisiana Civil Code in 1825, while others argue that the parish is named for Robert Livingston, the popular local lawyer who helped successfully negotiate for the Louisiana Purchase.
