Church Point

Neighboring the cities of Crowley, Opelousas, and Lafayette, the town of Church Point is a community located in Acadia Parish and houses over 4,500 residents. Originally settled by French settlers from Nova Scotia, many parts of the area in and around Church Point, Louisiana were scorched to promote new grass growth and attract wild animals. The vast burning of woody underbrush led to the city’s first name La Chapelle de la pointe de Plaquemine Brûlé, translated as “The Church at the Point of Burnt Persimmon” due to the large amount of Persimmon in the area. By the 1840’s, enough families settled in the area for Jesuit missionaries to construct a chapel for the community, which came to be known as “La Pointe de l'Eglise,” or “Church Point.” Proudly known as the “Buggy Capital of the World,” the town celebrates the Church Point Buggy Festival every year, providing fun for the whole family.
