Located in the heart of Louisiana’s famous “Cajun Country,” and just outside of Lafayette, the community of Cecilia houses over 1,500 residents and is located in south-central St. Martin Parish. Cecilia was first named by Spanish settlers as “La Punta” in describing the deep bend in Bayou Teche. When France took control of Louisiana, “La Punta” was translated as “La Grande Pointe.” While there are many stories regarding the origins of the name “Cecilia,” the most accepted story is that the community changed its name in honor of the community’s first female postal clerk, “Cecilia Lastrappes.” Cecilia is best known for its high volume of Cajun-speaking citizens, with over 42% of the residents using the Cajun language as their primary means of communication. Cecilia is the birthplace to many famous individuals, including Joseph “Bob” Angelle, former Louisiana State Representative and House Speaker, and former National Football League player Ramsey Dardar. Cecilia is also the final resting place of Confederate General Louis Hebert.
