One of the twenty-two Acadiana Parishes in Louisiana, Assumption Parish is home to more than 23,000 residents and was founded as the eighth parish of the Louisiana Territory in 1807. The parish is named for the Festival of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is located in southeastern Louisiana, neighboring Iberville Parish and Ascension Parish to the north. Due to the vast expanses of incredibly fertile soil, Assumption Parish is a largely agricultural-based parish and has long remained as one of the largest sugarcane producers in the entire state.
