Home to over 155,000 residents, Ouachita Parish is located in the north-central region of Louisiana and its parish seat is located in the city of Monroe. The parish was founded in 1807 and is named after the Ouachita Native American Indians. The parish shares its name with the Ouachita River, which flows through the parish and was first explored by Hernando De Soto in 1542. The original Ouachita Parish was much larger but was ultimately divided to form many of its present-day neighboring parishes, including the parishes of Morehouse, Caldwell, Union, Franklin, and Madison, among others. Ouachita Parish contains the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge and part of the D’Arbonne National Wildlife Refuge.
