J. Derek Aswell is an attorney at Broussard, David & Moroux whose practice areas include state and federal worker’s compensation, personal injury, offshore injury, and trucking accident law. A native of Ville Platte, Aswell is a proud graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management. After graduation, Aswell studied at Mississippi College, obtaining his Juris Doctorate and Masters in Business Administration in 2008. During law school, he volunteered for the Mississippi Center for Legal Services, where he assisted people in need during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
After law school, Aswell moved back to Acadiana and began practicing in the areas of personal injury, workers compensation, social security and contract law. Currently a member of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association (LBA) and the Lafayette Parish Young Lawyers Association, Aswell was honored with the "Outstanding Attorney” award for his work with the Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers three years in a row. Through the LBA Young Lawyers program, he has chaired the mock trial competition for the region, as well as being the chair of the social committee, and now serves as chair of the continuing legal education committee. Aswell has has taught continuing legal education seminars in worker’s compensation.
Aswell is also an owner of Knobbhill Hunting Lodge with his father and two brothers, and he aids in the operation of the business that brings Texas style hunting to Louisiana. When time permits, he enjoys participating in community projects in the Lafayette area volunteering for Downtown Lafayette.
