Founded in 1884, Broussard is located in both Lafayette Parish and St. Martin Parish and is home to over 8,600 residents. The area was originally named Côte Gelée (French for “Frozen Hills”) due to the notoriously harsh winter of 1784 and for its noteworthy hilly ridges. After its founding in 1884, Côte Gelée was renamed to Broussard after Valsin Broussard, a merchant who founded the first Vigilante Committee in the area.
Broussard boasts some of the most expansive sugarcane production in Louisiana, which, alongside Texas, Florida, and Hawaii, is only one of four states to commercially produce sugarcane.
