Presently serving as the seat of Vermilion Parish, Abbeville is a small town located outside of Lafayette and Baton Rouge that is home to over 12,000 residents. The town was settled in 1843 and was originally named “La Chapelle” after the French hometown of the original founder, Père Antoine Désiré Mégret, before its name change to “Abbeville” a few years later.
